There are certain myths surrounding mental illness like; it’s just a phase and a part of their personality that cannot be changed. Mental illness is a sickness and needs to be taken seriously, just like physical health conditions.

Why is it a sickness to be taken seriously?

Mental illness deforms the physiology of the brain and does not allow the patient to function correctly. To be diagnosed with mental illness has to have several symptoms. Those people who even have mild symptoms of mental illness usually have to face verbal and physical violence in society. People tend to visibly discriminate between a person who has a mental illness and a healthy one. This discrimination often affects the individual’s self-image, and poor self-esteem leads to several other hurdles to leading a healthy life.

Effects of Social dimensions

This social dimension stops people from seeking any help regarding their mental health condition. People hesitate to share their experiences with anyone, including their friends and family. The patients become isolated due to social stigmatization. The problem arises from the common mindset of people that mental health conditions are not even considered to be a disorder.
